A report by the International Data Corporation says that Apple has overtaken Samsung in the smartphone segment to take the numero uno position. The iPhone maker managed this feat by shipping 20.3 million handsets by the second quarter of 2011. This is despite Samsung recording a whopping 380.6 percent growth in the segment. The Korean electronics giant manufactured 17.3 million handsets this year, as opposed to 3.6 million for the same quarter last year.
Nokia is the only mobile player that saw a drop in production. It had shipped 24 million smartphones last year, which reduced to just 16.7 million this year. That's a 30.4% drop. Research In Motion showed a realtively marginal growth of 10.7% by shipping 12.4 million handsets this year.

HTC too has seen a healthy growth in volume. The Taiwanese cellphone manufacturer churned out 11.7 million handsets this year. This is a 165.9% growth over the 4.4 million smartphones manufactured last year.
The numbers definitely look good for Apple, but Samsung isn't too far behind with its exponential growth rate. The rest won't go down without a fight either. The Nokia-Microsoft love child Sea Ray that we glimpsed earlier promises to usher a new direction for the company. Only time will tell if it can help the Finnish company to regain its crown.
